You can never use too much garlic
Here's what's going on this week in Calgary, Alberta.
Another week brings another edition of From Calgary.
The trees have lost nearly all their leaves, and colder temperatures are approaching.
The Blue Jays are 1 win away from making all of Canada proud in the World Series, and the Calgary Flames are trying to find their footing as the NHL season rolls on.
Plus… you can never use too much garlic.
🪴 FALL GARDEN REPORT
🍂 Prepping for a Beautiful Spring
As autumn’s chill settles over Calgary and the first frosts begin to sparkle on the lawn, now’s the perfect time to give your garden a little TLC before winter takes hold. Fall isn’t just about winding down… It’s about setting the stage for next year’s growth.
Clean Up and Cut Back. Start by removing spent annuals, fallen leaves, and any diseased plant material. Compost what you can, but discard anything with mildew or blight to avoid spreading issues next season. Perennials like peonies, daylilies, and hostas can be trimmed down to a few inches above the soil once their foliage has yellowed. Leave a few seed heads, like coneflowers or echinacea, for birds and winter interest.
Protect Perennials and Shrubs. Calgary’s freeze-thaw cycles can be tough on roots. Add a layer of mulch (about 3–4 inches) around perennials and shrubs to help insulate them through the cold months. Water deeply before the ground freezes—moist soil retains heat better than dry soil. For tender shrubs like roses, mound soil or leaves around the base and cover with burlap once temperatures stay below freezing.
🧄 PRO TIP: Plant Garlic for a Rewarding Spring. Fall is garlic-planting season in Alberta! Choose hardy varieties, such as Music or Russian Red. Break apart the bulbs and plant the cloves (pointy side up) about 2 inches deep and 6 inches apart in well-drained soil. Cover the bed with straw or leaves for insulation. Come spring, you’ll see green shoots popping through the mulch, and by mid-summer, you’ll harvest plump bulbs bursting with flavour.
Prep for Spring Blooms. If you want a burst of colour next April, now’s the time to tuck in tulip, daffodil, and crocus bulbs. Plant them about three times as deep as the bulb’s height and water them once after planting. They’ll rest quietly under the snow, ready to brighten your garden when the thaw comes.
Final Touches. Drain garden hoses, clean your tools, and empty any ceramic pots that might crack in freezing weather. Finally, take a moment to admire your handiwork because a little effort now means a thriving, beautiful garden when Calgary finally thaws next spring.
🏔️ TAKE A TRIP
Escape to Bragg Creek for the Weekend
Just 45 minutes southwest of downtown Calgary, Bragg Creek feels like another world entirely. Nestled where the foothills meet the Rockies, it’s the kind of place where the air smells like pine and woodsmoke, and time seems to slow down.
Spend your mornings exploring the endless network of trails in Bragg Creek Provincial Park or nearby West Bragg Creek, perfect for hiking, fat-tire biking, or snowshoeing once the snow hits. If you’d rather relax, cozy up in one of the area’s boutique cabins or luxury yurts tucked among the trees, where the only nighttime noise is the wind through the evergreens.
After your outdoor adventures, wander through the tiny hamlet itself: grab a latte at The Spoon, browse the local art galleries, or linger over a fireside meal at The Italian Farmhouse or The Heart Café. Whether you go for a day or a whole weekend, Bragg Creek is the quickest way to reset without ever really leaving Calgary behind… Close to home, but worlds away.

CALGARY FLAMES
The Calgary Flames are in a transitional season, blending a youthful roster with key veterans as they look to build consistency under new leadership. Early flashes of strong two-way play and improved chemistry suggest the team could surprise opponents as the season progresses.
