The Calgary Flames are officially one of the hottest teams in the NHL heading into 2026. After a dominant 5–1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on New Year’s Eve, the Flames have clawed their way back to a .500 record (18–18–4).

It is a remarkable turnaround for a squad that sat at the very bottom of the league standings earlier this season. While they are still currently chasing a Wild Card spot in the crowded Western Conference, they have moved past several divisional rivals and are within striking distance of the postseason conversation.

This "worst-to-first" trajectory has fans drawing parallels to the 2019 St. Louis Blues, who famously sat in last place in January before going on to win the Stanley Cup. We can hope… right?!?

Calgary's recent success has been fueled by a stifling defense and clutch performances from Mikael Backlund and Dustin Wolf, proving that in the NHL, it’s not how you start, but how you finish.
