The Stampede's wildest food menu yet (a bug is involved)

Calgary, patio season officially starts this week

Good morning, Calgary! Hope you survived the May long weekend with all your eyebrows intact. We're back with a Tuesday edition that's all about the run into summer.

The Stampede just dropped its wildest midway food lineup yet, Butterfield Acres is finally open again, and the Stamps kicked off the season with a Victoria Day win. Plus, a new family diner in Crescent Heights that locals are already lining up for. Let's get into it.

🌿 City Spotlight: The Bow River Pathway Is Calling

Patio season is here, which means pathway season is too. The Bow River Pathway is the crown jewel of Calgary's 1,000+ kilometer network, and the stretch through Edworthy Park and the Douglas Fir Trail is at its absolute best right now. The trees are leafed out, the river is running high and loud, and the whole valley smells like spring.

Park free at Edworthy Park (5050 Spruce Dr SW), grab the paved path heading east toward downtown, and you'll get the river on one side and the city skyline opening up in front of you. It's flat, stroller and bike friendly, and you can bail out at any point. Want a challenge? The Douglas Fir Trail climbs up into one of the last old growth stands in the city, with staircases and boardwalks built into the hillside.

Bring water, bring a coffee, and go early. The pathway is quietest before 9 AM. No fee, no booking, just go.

🌭 The Stampede Just Unleashed Its Most Outrageous Food Menu

The Calgary Stampede pulled the curtain back on its 2026 midway food lineup last week, and it is a lot. This year's menu features more than 65 new items, ranging from revamped classics like triple chocolate mini doughnuts and Korean BBQ poutine, to unexpected choices such as a rib-stuffed cookie and a pickled green cheeseburger. The headliner is the Cheesy Saddle Slice, a slice of pizza dipped in corn dog batter, dusted with Cheetos seasoning, and deep fried, which won a fan naming contest with more than 1,900 entries. There's also a wagyu rice cracker "bigger than your head," a ramen-crusted doughnut, and Mexican street corn topped with dried mealworms for the truly brave. The Stampede runs July 3 to 12, and yes, the corn dogs and mini donuts are still there if you'd rather not eat a bug. Start training your stomach now.

🐐 Butterfield Acres Is Open Again & It’s Baby Animal Season

Calgary's beloved northwest petting farm reopened its doors this Monday after a tough stretch. After weeks of being shut down due to an outbreak of the highly contagious gastro-intestinal illness, cryptosporidium, in April, Butterfield acres opened its doors on Monday. The farm worked closely with Alberta Health Services to disinfect the property and bring everything back up to standard. The timing couldn't be better, because the barn is full of newborn lambs, goats, and the spring babies that make this place a rite of passage for Calgary kids. It's been a family fixture for more than 40 years. If you've been waiting for the all clear to take the little ones, this is it.

🏈 The Stamps Open the Season With a Victoria Day Win

Football is back. The Calgary Stampeders kicked off their 2026 CFL preseason with a 20-15 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders at McMahon Stadium on Victoria Day. The defense set the tone early with an interception on Saskatchewan's opening drive, and then quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. connected with Jalen Philpot for a stunning 70-yard touchdown pass, putting the Stampeders up 7-0. The Riders, who are the defending Grey Cup champs, rested most of their starters, so don't read too much into it, but a win is a win and the energy at McMahon was real. The Stampeders will hit the road to face the Edmonton Elks on May 29 for their final preseason game before the home opener against Winnipeg on June 5. Red and white season starts now.

🍽️ Featured Restaurant: The Basic on Centre

Location: 1115 Centre St NW, Crescent Heights
Vibe: Classic diner, big portions

A Vancouver legend quietly made its Calgary debut this winter and the locals have already adopted it. The Basic started life over 30 years ago as Vancouver's "Joe's Grill," and this Crescent Heights spot is its first location outside BC. It's a bright, windowed, cheerful room serving exactly what you want from a diner: stacked pancakes, properly built bennies, omelettes, and a roster of burgers and sandwiches for the lunch crowd. Regulars rave about the generous portions and fair prices, and the owner has been known to come out and chat. Go for a classic benny or the spicy pulled pork hash, come hungry, and know that it's walk-in only, open Tuesday through Sunday, 9 AM to 3 PM, closed Mondays. It's already pulling a 4.8 rating, so expect a small wait on weekends and arrive early.

A soggy start to the week with showers on Tuesday, then it dries out and warms up nicely. Thursday through the weekend is patio weather. A frost advisory was in effect earlier in the week, so keep an eye on tender plants for another night or two.

PETS: Time to meet some new friends. Harvey the large mixed breed dog, Fluffy the cat, and Nibbles the rabbit are all looking for forever homes at the Calgary Humane Society.

FEATURED EVENT - FREE MEN’S WORKOUTS

Let's be honest about something. The hardest part of getting in shape isn't the workout. It's doing it alone, week after week, with nobody waiting on you and nobody to answer to.

F3 Calgary fixes that. It's a free men's workout group that meets outside four mornings a week, year round, in every kind of Calgary weather. No gym membership. No app. No sign-up form. You just show up.

Every workout is different, and each is led by a different guy from the group, so it never gets stale, and nobody is selling you anything. You'll sweat, you'll laugh, and you'll meet men who actually notice when you don't show.

That last part is the whole point. The fitness is real, but the reason guys keep coming back at 5:30 AM is the other men standing next to them in the dark. Set your alarm, find the park, and let the rest take care of itself.

Tuesday & Thursday, 5:30–6:15 AM
Saturdays & Sundays, 6:30–7:30 AM
