Top 3 Stories🏗️ A New Landmark for Stampede Park
Construction has officially begun on the Autograph Collection Hotel by Truman, a 13-story luxury property that marks a historic first for Stampede Park. Located directly across from the BMO Centre, this $330M project is the first of three planned hotels designed to turn the Culture + Entertainment District into a world-class convention hub. With a rooftop lounge, pool, and 320 rooms slated to open in 2028, it’s a massive step forward for Calgary’s skyline and tourism economy. More info.
🌬️ Chinook Blast Unveils a New Home at Eau Claire
Calgary’s premier winter festival, Chinook Blast, is returning from January 30 to February 16 with a brand-new central hub at the recently renovated Eau Claire Plaza. This year’s "reimagined" experience features 14 massive light installations, including 28-foot-tall "Electric Dandelions" and a 13-meter glowing geodesic dome. From "Drag on Ice" at Prince's Island Lagoon to night markets at the Chinese Cultural Centre, the festival is set to turn our coldest weeks into a glowing community celebration.
🏒 Community "Ice" Isolation: Rinks & Resilience
Despite the ongoing challenges with the Bearspaw South Feeder Main, the spirit of "The Great Outdoors" is thriving. While the city works toward a mid-to-late week reopening of 16th Avenue, community rinks across Calgary have become the ultimate neighborhood hubs. Local volunteers are being hailed as "ice heroes," using creative water-saving measures to keep community rinks frozen for families. Repair update.

🏔️ TAKE A TRIP
🌲 The K-Country Day Escape
The Vibe: High-altitude relaxation meets accessible adventure.
Morning: The "Gateway to K-Country"
The Hike: Troll Falls. This is the gold standard for easy winter hikes. It’s a flat, 3.4 km return trip that leads to a massive, frozen waterfall that looks like a cathedral of blue ice. Pro Tip: If you have a bit more energy, follow the signs past the main falls to the "Upper Falls" for several more frozen cascades that most tourists miss. Don’t forget your shoe spikes and poles as the trail can ice iver.
The Coffee Stop: Swing by Lonsdale Pub or the Two Trees Bistro inside the Kananaskis Mountain Lodge at the Village. It’s a great spot to warm your hands and grab a pastry before heading out.
Afternoon: Choose Your Own Pace
The Ultimate Unwind (Nordic Spa): If "relaxation" is the goal, the Kananaskis Nordic Spa is right there in the Village. It’s an outdoor circuit of hot, warm, and cold pools. The Insider Secret: If the spa is fully booked (which happens fast), you can still access the skating pond at the Kananaskis Mountain Lodge. It’s tucked in the trees and feels much more private than the big city rinks.
Late Afternoon: The Sunset Drive & Snack
The View: Drive 10 minutes further south on Highway 40 to the Wedge Pond turnaround. In the winter, the reflection of Mount Kidd against the pond is one of the most photographed spots in the Rockies. You might not get a stunning shot like this during the winter, but the view is still amazing!
The "Worth the Drive" Treat: On your way back to Calgary, stop in Bragg Creek at The Powderhorn Saloon. It’s a legendary local spot with a massive fireplace and the best "mountain-sized" nachos to fuel the drive home.
Pro Tips for the Trip:
The Kananaskis Conservation Pass: Unlike Banff, you don’t need a Parks Canada pass here, but you do need a Kananaskis Conservation Pass ($15 per day, per vehicle). You can buy it online here before you leave.
Check the Road: Highway 40 is well-maintained, but it can get gusty. Check 511 Alberta for road conditions before you head out!
Unique accommodations in
🍽️ Feature Restaurant: Happy Lamb Hot Pot
Location: 999 36 St NE (Pacific Place Mall)
Vibe: Steamy, Communal, and High-Energy
If you’re looking to escape the January chill, there is no better sanctuary than the steam-filled dining room of Happy Lamb. Located in the heart of the Northeast, this isn't just a meal; it’s an interactive event. The atmosphere is perpetually buzzing—think large round tables, bubbling stainless steel pots, and the savory aroma of a broth that has been simmering for over six hours. It’s unpretentious, lively, and the kind of place where you’ll want to roll up your sleeves and stay a while.
The Must-Order: The Signature Bone Marrow Broth (Original). It’s milky, rich, and soul-warming. If you like a kick, go for the Yin-Yang Pot so you can swap between the herbal original and the spicy mala broth.
The Crowd Pleaser: The Fresh Sliced Lamb Shoulder and the Handmade Shrimp Paste. The lamb is sliced paper-thin so it cooks in seconds, and the shrimp paste is served on a bamboo paddle for you to scoop "pearls" directly into the boiling broth.
The Sweet Finish: After all that savory heat, order a round of Fried Golden Mini Buns (Mantou) served with condensed milk. They are crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and the perfect way to cool down your palate.
Pro Tip: It’s "All You Can Eat," so come hungry, but be mindful—they charge a small fee for excess food waste to encourage sustainable eating! It gets incredibly busy on weekends, so aim for an early dinner or put your name on the list and browse the T&T Supermarket next door while you wait. Bonus Pro Tip: It’s FREE on your birthday!

🌤️ Pro Tip: The "Record-Breaker" Chinook Calgary is officially in the grip of a major Chinook, with Wednesday’s forecast of 12°C likely to smash the previous 2004 record of 11.2°C! While it feels like an early spring, the real challenge is the "ice-rink effect." With daytime highs hitting double digits and overnight lows still dipping near or below freezing, the city will experience a massive freeze-thaw cycle.
For your commute: Watch out for "black ice" in the shadows of tall buildings and on bridge decks, which stays frozen even when the air feels warm. For your home: Take five minutes today to clear the slush and debris from your nearest storm drain. Helping that meltwater find its way home now will prevent a massive skating rink from forming on your sidewalk (and save your basement from potential seepage) once the sun goes down.

CALGARY FLAMES
The Calgary Flames are finally breathing a sigh of relief after snapping a four-game skid with a gritty 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins this past weekend. It’s been a whirlwind start to 2026, with the team navigating the "mushy middle" of the standings while stars like Rasmus Andersson dominate the trade rumor mill and rookie William Strömgren finds his footing after a recent NHL debut. The road trip continues through Columbus tonight and Chicago on Thursday, but the real highlight for the "C of Red" is just around the corner. The Flames return to the Scotiabank Saddledome for a packed home stand starting this Saturday, January 17th against the New York Islanders, followed by matchups with the New Jersey Devils (Jan 19) and a rematch with the Penguins (Jan 21).
