🚿 A City Refreshed: Water Restrictions Lifted
In a major win for Calgary’s resilience, the City officially lifted all outdoor water restrictions this past Friday. After weeks of careful monitoring and repairs to the Bearspaw South Feeder Main, Mayor Jeromy Farkas announced that water is flowing normally once again. This milestone marks the end of a long journey of community cooperation, where Calgarians’ conservation efforts played a vital role in protecting our water supply. It’s time to celebrate the return of our everyday comforts and a big "thank you" to the city crews who worked through the winter cold to get the job done.
📚 A Record-Breaking Year for Reading
The Calgary Public Library is celebrating a historic achievement this week, announcing that circulation has hit its highest levels in the system's history. From digital audiobooks to physical bestsellers and community meeting spaces, Calgarians are utilizing their local branches more than ever before. This surge in usage highlights our city’s deep-seated love for learning and the vital role the library plays as a "living room" for our neighborhoods. Whether you're visiting for a quiet study session or a kid’s storytime, the library remains a cornerstone of Calgary’s community spirit. Side note, these library socks are awesome.
⛸️ Skijoring and SnowDays Spark Winter Joy
The magic of winter is in full swing as Calgary’s "SnowDays" and the nearby "Skijor Canada" events kicked off the season with record attendance. Thousands of people gathered to witness the high-energy spectacle of skijoring—where skiers are pulled by horses through snowy obstacles—blending Alberta’s western heritage with winter sport. Meanwhile, back in the city, local community rinks are seeing a flurry of activity following the lifting of water restrictions, with "ice heroes" in neighborhoods like Bridgeland and Sunnyside hosting pop-up skating parties to welcome back the community.

🍽️ Feature Restaurant: Lotus Fine Indian Cuisine
Location: 3843 19 St NW
Vibe: With a near-perfect reputation for some of the best butter chicken in the city, Lotus offers a cozy, family-run atmosphere that feels like a warm hug on a cold Calgary day.
Lotus Fine Indian Cuisine in the Northwest offers a warm, welcoming spot that has become a local favorite for its authentic North Indian flavors. Established in 2016, this family-owned gem is known for its traditional cooking methods, including the use of a clay tandoor oven that adds a signature smoky char to their grilled dishes and fresh breads.
Signature Dishes: Reviewers frequently highlight the Butter Chicken for its silky, perfectly balanced tomato and butter gravy, as well as the Lamb Bhuna, which features tender meat slow-cooked until the sauce is thick and robust.
Vegetarian Favorites: The Kadhai Paneer and slow-cooked Daal Makhani, often called the "king of dals,” are staples that define their vegetarian menu.
Atmosphere: The dining space is described as cozy and elegant, featuring warm tones, authentic Indian background music, and a calm vibe that makes it suitable for anything from a casual business lunch to a special family celebration.
Unique Features: For those looking to sample a variety of flavors, they offer a popular daily lunch buffet and a highly-regarded "Non-veg Thali" that provides a curated assortment of their top dishes.
🏔️ TAKE A TRIP
🐺 The Wolfdog & Waterfall Wander
The Vibe: This trip to the Cochrane area, only about 45 minutes each way feels like a total escape. Expect wild encounters and a hidden valley oasis. It features a unique wildlife encounter and a "hidden gem" waterfall that stays running even in -20°C.
Morning: A Meeting with the Pack
The Destination: Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary. This is one of the only places in the world where you can get up close to wolfdogs.
The Experience: In the winter, the wolfdogs have their thick, fluffy winter coats, making them look even more majestic. If you have kids with you (must be 6+), the Sanctuary Walk is a great self-guided way to see the different packs.
Pro Tip: Dress warmer than you think you need to! You’ll be standing and walking outside for the duration, and the sanctuary is quite open to the wind.
Lunch: The Cochrane Classic
The Stop: Head 15 minutes back toward Cochrane for lunch. Mackay's Ice Cream is the legendary stop, and yes, Calgarians eat ice cream in January! For something warmer, Cuore di Mamma offers incredible, authentic sandwiches and soup.
Afternoon: The "Living" Waterfalls
The Hike: Big Hill Springs Provincial Park. This is a true local secret. Because the springs come from deep underground, the water stays at a constant 6°C year-round.
The View: This means that even in the dead of winter, you’ll see vibrant green moss and flowing water surrounded by ice and snow. The loop is only 2.2 km and very flat—perfect for a post-lunch stroll.
Safety Considerations: Due to the constant mist and running water, the boardwalks and stairs can become extremely icy and slippery. It is highly recommended to wear ice cleats or "spikes" on your boots to navigate the incline sections safely.
Late Afternoon: The Coffee & View Return
The Refuel: Grab a "Beamer’s Coffee" in downtown Cochrane before heading back.
The Sunset Drive: Take Highway 1A on the way back to Calgary. As the sun sets over the foothills behind you, the view of the city skyline appearing in the distance is one of the best ways to end the day.
Pro Tips for the Trip: Sanctuary Booking: If you want the "Interactive Tour" (where you actually go inside the enclosure), you must book in advance as they sell out fast.

🌤️ Pro Tip: Look Up: A Chance for the Northern Lights. The best part of these clear, cold nights? We have a moderate-to-high probability (Kp 4) of seeing the Northern Lights on Monday and Tuesday night (Jan 19-20). The peak window is typically between 11:00 PM and 2:00 AM. Since the moon is in its "New Moon" phase (meaning the sky is extra dark), you won't have to drive far. Nose Hill Park or the Cochrane Ranche are fantastic local spots. If you're willing to drive 20 minutes south, the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area is a designated nocturnal preserve and offers the darkest skies near the city.
