Taps on. Pucks dropping. Cream puffs ready. 🥐

Here's what's happening in Calgary this week.

Calgary's taps are back on, the World Cup of Hockey is coming to town, and Expo season is almost here. Plus a French bakery in Marda Loop worth getting out of bed for, a Flames season winding down with one eye already on the future, and a packed week of happenings to close out April 6–12. Let's get into it.

Top 3 Stories

💧 Calgary, You Did It: Water Restrictions Lifted Ahead of Schedule

After nearly four weeks of shorter showers and skipped laundry loads, Calgarians can turn the taps back on. Crews completed repairs to nine damaged sections of the Bearspaw South Feeder Main a few days ahead of schedule, and the city lifted all water restrictions Thursday morning. Mayor Jeromy Farkas summed up the mood at a morning press conference: "Calgary, you did it. We did it." The Bearspaw carries roughly 60% of the city's drinking water, and a full replacement pipe is on track to be completed by December. Well done, neighbours.

🏒 Alberta Lands the World Cup of Hockey 2028

Big news for hockey fans: Calgary and Edmonton beat out more than two dozen cities across North America and Europe to jointly host the 2028 World Cup of Hockey, with Prague serving as the European co-host. Calgary's Scotia Place will host seven games, while the semifinals and final head to Rogers Place in Edmonton. The tournament is projected to generate $375 million in economic impact for Alberta, supporting over 43,000 jobs and filling nearly 172,000 hotel rooms. Mark your calendars for February 2028.

🎉 Calgary Expo (Comics & Entertainment) Is Three Weeks Away and the Lineup Is Stacked

One of the biggest pop culture events in North America is almost here. The Calgary Comics and Entertainment Expo runs April 23 to 26 at Stampede Park, drawing nearly 100,000 fans to celebrate comics, sci-fi, gaming, fantasy, horror, and more. This year's celebrity roster is a nostalgia goldmine: the full Fellowship is reuniting, with Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan, and Billy Boyd all appearing, and Goonies fans will find Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, Joe Pantoliano, and more on hand. Cary Elwes from The Princess Bride and Anthony Daniels, the original C-3PO, round out an already incredible guest list. Bring the kids, dust off your cosplay, and get your tickets before they're gone.

A quick word from today’s sponsor that helps keep the From Calgary Newsletter FREE!

The same cell network as Telus, for a fraction of the price. That’s the tagline that Public Mobile should use because that’s what they offer.

Their Canada-USA-Mexico plans are amazing because you can use your phone in all 3 countries with ZERO roaming charges. I’ve been using Public Mobile for a while now, and (obviously) recommended it.

🍽️ Choux & C

Location: #121, 2215 33rd Ave. SW (Marda Loop)
Vibe: French Bakery & Café

Choux & C opened its doors in Marda Loop in early March, and its specialty is something Calgary hasn't really had before: choux à la crème, classic French cream puffs made in rotating flavours like crème brûlée, coconut, passion fruit, and macchiato. Alongside the cream puffs, there are traditional French pastries and carefully crafted coffee drinks to round things out. It's the kind of neighbourhood spot that's equally good for a quiet weekday morning or a weekend treat with the kids. Get there early, as these tend to sell out.

CALGARY FLAMES

The Flames are sitting 7th in the Pacific and mathematically out of the playoff picture. It's been a tale of two extremes: after a rough stretch through February and early March, the team actually showed some life with a nice run in late March, rattling off wins over St. Louis, Florida, Tampa Bay, LA, and Vancouver before the wheels came off again to close things out. The rebuild is clearly underway, with youth getting a long look down the stretch and veterans like Nazem Kadri traded away for future assets. Eight games remain to finish the season, but the real story now is the offseason. Draft capital, prospect development, and a busy summer ahead. The future in Calgary is being built, even if the present is a little painful.
