Crosses rise. Leafs land. Lights turn 30. 🎃
The red-hot Flames host the Leafs tonight, a free costume relay takes over Confederation Park Tuesday, and the first real snow lands Wednesday.

Good morning, Calgary! Halloween week is here, and so is winter's first real punch. Expect a crisp, sunny-ish Monday and Tuesday, then snow on Wednesday with a high of -2°.
The Flames have won three straight and host the Maple Leafs tonight (text 403-975-5515 for tickets), more than 3,700 crosses now line Memorial Drive, and ZOOLIGHTS just announced its 30th-anniversary lineup. Plus a free skeleton-arm costume relay, a haunted dinner at Heritage Park, a Halloween history tour, and live music every night.
Find your toque and let's get into it.
📚 City Spotlight: Calgary’s Central Library Turns 8

Snow on Wednesday? Here's the best free indoor escape in the city. Calgary's Central Library at 800 3 St SE opened on November 1, 2018, and it still stops people in their tracks. Designed by Snøhetta and Calgary's DIALOG, the 240,000 sq. ft. building has five levels, about 600,000 items, and a wild bit of engineering underneath: it was built right over an active CTrain line, a first for Calgary. More than a million people visited in its first seven months alone (fun facts here).
It's completely FREE to walk in, and a library card won't cost you a cent either. Hours are 9 AM to 8 PM Monday to Thursday, 9 AM to 6 PM Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM Saturday and noon to 5 PM Sunday.
Pro tip: take the CTrain to City Hall, walk in through the curved wooden entrance, and head up through the levels. Grab a window seat with a book, let the kids loose in the children's space, and watch the snow come down over East Village.

🛣️ The Final Stretch of Tsuut’ina Parkway Is Open
Southwest drivers, you've got a new shortcut. The final stretch of Tsuut'ina Parkway opened at noon on Thursday, Oct 22nd, linking the Taza Park development on Tsuut'ina Nation land with Westhills. It's the last piece of the 2013 land agreement between the Nation and the Province that made the southwest Ring Road possible. "This is a connector for people," Minor Chief Zachary Manywounds said at the opening, and Signal Hill residents say it's already easier to get around. Next up on the roughly 470-acre Taza site: a Walmart under construction, plus grocery stores and restaurants on the way.
🌺 The Field of Crosses Returns to Memorial Drive
Volunteers spent Saturday planting more than 3,700 crosses along Memorial Drive, just west of Centre Street, and the Field of Crosses is back for its 18th year. Each cross honours a southern Albertan who died serving Canada. The display runs Nov 1 to 11, open 24/7 and lit up at night, with short sunrise and sunset ceremonies every day from Nov 1 to 10. Nov 1 is Memorial Cross Families Day, the Night of Lights on Nov 10 puts a lantern at every cross, and the Remembrance Day ceremony starts at 10:10 AM on Nov 11. New this year: a larger parade square and a cross for the unknown soldier. Parking is easiest in Eau Claire. Bring the kids, it's a powerful lesson.
✨ ZOOLIGHTS Turns 30 With a Glowing Bamboo Trail
Calgary's favourite winter tradition is hitting a big birthday. ZOOLIGHTS celebrates its 30th season at the Calgary Zoo from Nov 13 to Jan 3, open nightly from 5:30 to 9:30 PM (closed Dec 25), with more than a million lights. New this year: a glowing bamboo trail, prairie-inspired displays, an illuminated "30" photo spot, the Find Your Wild Maze, and walk-through gingerbread houses. Fan favourites are back too, including free axe throwing, the carousel, and Santa's Polar Palace. Tickets are on sale now with Plan-Ahead Pricing, so the earlier you buy, the more you save. Wonder Wednesdays (20% off, Nov 18 to Dec 16) are the budget move.

🥕 Featured Restaurant: Ten Foot Henry
Location: 1209 1 St SW (Beltline)
Vibe: Bright, plant-filled and buzzy, with vegetable-forward plates made for sharing
Cold week? Warm up somewhere that feels like summer. Ten Foot Henry is an all-day, family-style restaurant built around one idea: bridging the gap between what you should eat and what you really want to eat. The menu is anchored by fresh vegetables and seasonal plates meant for passing around the table, plus pastas and proteins to round it out. The name is pure Calgary history: Henry is a 10-foot replica of the 1930s comic strip character who became a muse for the city's creative scene in the 1980s. Partners Stephen Smee and Aja Lapointe borrowed him from One Yellow Rabbit Theatre and brought him home to 1209 1st Street SW, where he lived for 19 years at the old Night Gallery.
Pro Tip: It's open every day from 11 AM to 11 PM, with brunch Saturday and Sunday until 2 PM. Reservations are encouraged (max party of 6), but walk-ins are welcome. Follow @tenfoothenry to see what's on the menu this month.

Heads up: Monday starts with a wind chill near -12, so bundle up for the morning commute. Tuesday is the pick of the week at 6°. Snow arrives Wednesday with a high of -2°, and flurries linger Thursday. The good news: Halloween Saturday looks sunny and around 8° for trick-or-treaters.

🛰️ $1,000 Back on Satellite Internet for Rural Alberta
Got an acreage, a farm, or family out past the city limits? Alberta's new Satellite Rebate Program pays back up to $1,000 for satellite internet hardware, installation and taxes. It's built for rural and remote households without access to high-speed internet, so Calgary addresses won't qualify. Pop the address into the eligibility map on that page to check, and if it's a seasonal cabin, read the household rules there first.
How it works: buy the kit (renting doesn't count), subscribe, and after your first month of service, apply with your receipts through a verified Alberta.ca account. Purchases from Aug 11, 2026 to March 31, 2027 are eligible. Starlink kits currently qualify, and you can grab one through my Starlink referral link (get $100 cash or Starlink service credit with this link) [#ad].
