Ghouls return. Pipes nearly done. Pens flourish. 🎃

Here's what's happening in Calgary this week (Oct 19-21).

Good morning, Calgary! We're starting the week mild and mostly sunny, and Wednesday is the standout at a gorgeous 18°. Soak it up, because rain and a cold snap roll in by Friday.

Heritage Park's Halloween nights are almost here, the city's big water main project hits the home stretch (with a date you'll want on your calendar), and some of the world's best calligraphers land at Hotel Blackfoot.

Plus provincial referendum voting is today, a free Death Becomes Her screening at Central Library, Little Shop of Horrors' final week, and live music every night.

Grab a coffee and let's get into it.

🦆 City Spotlight: Fall Migration at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary

Tucked into a bend of the Bow River, the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary has been a rest stop for migrating birds since 1929. More than 270 bird species have been recorded here, and late October is a great time to see who's passing through on the way south.

It's completely FREE. The trails are open sunrise to sunset, and the Nature Centre is open daily from 9:30 AM to 4 PM until Oct 31, when it closes for the season.

Pro tip: no dogs or bikes are allowed, so leave Fido at home and bring binoculars instead. Wednesday's 18° is your window, and sunset is around 6:30 PM this week. Grab a coffee on 9 Avenue in Inglewood on the way out.

🎃 Heritage Park's Ghouls' Night Out Returns This Weekend

Calgary's favourite family Halloween tradition is back. Ghouls' Night Out takes over Heritage Park's Historical Village on Friday, Oct 23 and Saturday, Oct 24 from 5 to 9 PM, and Sunday, Oct 25 from 3 to 7 PM. Expect a Halloween maze, a haunted house, Ghostbusters HQ with Ecto-1, cookie decorating, spooky storytelling, a haunted midway and a monster dance party at the bandstand. Tickets are $24.95 for ages 16+ and $18.95 for kids 3 to 15 (plus GST), and it goes ahead rain or shine. Grown-ups get their own night too: the 18+ Carnival of Curiosities runs Thursday, Oct 22 from 6 to 10 PM for $29.95. Costumes encouraged, and bring a flashlight. Pro Tip: The bakery's cinnamon buns with extra icing are worth the wait.

💧 Calgary's Big Water Main Fix Hits the Home Stretch

Some good news on the long road back. The City says the new Bearspaw South Feeder Main is entering its final steps, with crews connecting the new pipe into the system starting Nov 4th and bringing it into service by the end of the year. Most of the specialized materials are already on-site in Calgary. To do it safely, the old line has to shut down, so city-wide Stage 4 outdoor water restrictions and indoor water conservation kick in on Nov 4th for about four weeks. That means no outdoor water use at all, and the City is asking everyone, including neighbours in Airdrie, Chestermere, Strathmore and Tsuut'ina Nation, to cut back indoors too. Wash the car and top up the hot tub before Nov 4th, and we'll get through the final push together.

✒️ The World's Top Calligraphers Land at Hotel Blackfoot

Calgary is about to become the centre of the pen-and-ink universe. Flourish Festival runs Thursday, Oct 22 to Sunday, Oct 25 at Hotel Blackfoot, bringing together 350+ artists and creatives with faculty from the US, the UK, Portugal, the Netherlands and across Canada. The lineup includes Los Angeles calligrapher Nina Tran and Barcelona's Gabriela Soba, whose clients include Hermès and Louis Vuitton. Full registration is $795, with single-day and two-day passes available, and beginners are genuinely welcome. The best part for the merely curious: the Experience Hall and gallery are open to the public at no charge throughout the festival. Pop in, watch a master work up close, and maybe finally buy that nib set.

I’ve banked at almost all the Canadian banks, and right now, my favourite banking option is Wealthsimple. Their app is incredible, there are no fees when investing, you can change your eTransfer limit to be a lot higher than the other banks, and they give away $1M per month!

Location: 1131 Kensington Rd NW (Kensington)

Vibe: Cozy neighbourhood wine bar, snacky small plates, great conversation

The old Kensington Wine Bar space has a new tenant, and it's in good hands. Tipsie comes from the team behind Inglewood's The Eden, with chef Dirk McCabe running the kitchen. The wine list wanders from Muscadet and Albariño to Barolo and Bandol, with a rotating by-the-glass selection, plus cocktails, local beer and zero-proof options. Pair a glass with Floating Stone beef tenderloin carpaccio, a terrine board with foie gras pâté, or a mortadella and provolone sandwich on a kaiser. Rainy Friday forecast? This is your spot.

Pro Tip: It's walk-ins only and closed Mondays. Go for happy hour (4 to 6 PM, Tuesday to Sunday), and follow @tipsieyyc for events like the Oct 29 winemaker dinner.

It's been a rough start. The Flames fell 6-2 in Vegas on Thursday as Mark Stone scored a third-period hat trick, dropping Calgary to 1-6-0 and last in the Pacific (this edition “went to press” before last night’s results). The bright spots: Jake Middleton scored his first goal as a Flame (short-handed, no less), and Matt Coronato added a late power-play goal. Sunday night kicked off a four-game homestand against the red-hot Carolina Hurricanes (7-1-1), and the Flames stay home to host Minnesota on Thursday, Detroit on Saturday and Toronto next Monday. Some home cooking is exactly what this young group needs.
