🚧 Shovels in the Ground: Bearspaw Replacement Begins

The wait is over. As of today (Friday, January 23rd), construction crews are officially mobilizing to begin work on the replacement for Calgary's "terminally ill" Bearspaw South Feeder Main. The accelerated project—announced just yesterday—aims to have a new parallel steel pipe completed by December 2026, a full year ahead of the original schedule. Mayor Jeromy Farkas called it a "relentless" effort to protect our community after the pipe ruptured twice in 18 months. Expect some road disruptions in the northwest over the coming months, but it's a small price to pay for water security. Crews will be working around the clock. More info

🎉 One Week Out: Chinook Blast is Almost Here

Mark your calendars: Chinook Blast returns January 30 to February 16 with a brand-new home at the freshly renovated Eau Claire Plaza. This year's sixth edition promises to be the biggest yet, with 14 larger-than-life light installations (including "Electric Dandelions"), a glowing geodesic dome, the return of Drag on Ice at Prince's Island Lagoon, live music, roving performers, and a new beer garden from Eighty-Eight Brewing Co. The best part? It's completely FREE. Next Friday kicks off with performances by Cedric Lightning and Kris Demeanor. Start planning your nights now. Full lineup

🎭 40 Years of Bold Art: High Performance Rodeo Continues

Calgary's legendary High Performance Rodeo is in full swing for its milestone 40th season. This week's highlights include Dream Machine at the Big Secret Theatre (a theatrical experience that's part concert, part dream state) and Juliet: A Revenge Comedy at the Martha Cohen Theatre (what if Juliet survived and wanted answers?). The festival runs through the end of January, so there's still plenty of time to catch something bold, weird, and wonderfully Calgary. Full schedule

🍽️ Feature Restaurant: OEB Breakfast Co.

Location: Multiple locations (Bridgeland, Southcentre, Kensington, and more)

Vibe: Elevated Brunch, Perfectly Executed

When the temperature drops to -15°C, there's nothing better than a steaming plate of something indulgent to start your weekend. OEB Breakfast Co. has been a Calgary institution for over a decade, and for good reason: they've mastered the art of turning breakfast classics into something extraordinary.

The space is bright, bustling, and unapologetically energetic—the kind of place where the smell of fresh coffee and sizzling bacon hits you the moment you walk in. It's upscale without being pretentious, which is exactly the Calgary way.

Pro Tip: OEB gets packed on weekends, especially the Bridgeland location. Put your name in early (they have a digital waitlist) or aim for a weekday visit. Book ahead

🏔️ TAKE “A TRIP”

❄️ The WinSport Snow Day

The Vibe: High-speed winter fun without leaving the city limits

Sometimes the best adventure is the one that's 20 minutes from your front door. This weekend, skip the mountain highway traffic and head to WinSport for a day of pure, adrenaline-fueled winter fun that the whole family can enjoy.

Morning: The Tube Park

  • The Experience: The Servus Tube Park is one of the fastest of its kind in Western Canada. You grab an inflatable tube, climb the "magic carpet" conveyor to the top, and then fly down the lanes at speeds that'll have you laughing (or screaming) the whole way down.

  • Pro Tip: Book your 2-hour session online in advance—they sell out fast on weekends, especially with this Saturday's snowy forecast. Dress warm; you'll be outside the whole time.

Midday: The Ski Hill

  • The Skiing: WinSport's ski hill (formerly COP) is perfect for beginners, families, or anyone who wants a quick ski fix without the drive. They've got a terrain park for the adventurous and mellow runs for those just learning.

  • The Lessons: If you've got kids who've never tried skiing or snowboarding, WinSport's lesson packages are some of the best in the city.

Afternoon: Warm Up Inside

  • The Refuel: Head to the Day Lodge (second floor) for a hot chocolate and a snack while you thaw out. There's also the EightyEight Bar & Grill at the WinSport Event Centre if you want something more substantial—pub grub and drinks with views of the ski jumps.

  • The Bonus: Stick around and catch a view of the ski jumps. Even if you're not jumping, watching the freestyle athletes train is pretty incredible.

Pro Tips for the Trip:

  • Parking: Free and plentiful, but arrive early on weekends.

  • Tube Park Booking: Seriously, book ahead.

🌤️ Pro Tip: Look Up: A Tale of Two Weekends. Saturday is going to be a classic Calgary winter day. Expect snow and temperatures around -15°C. But don't despair! By Sunday, a chinook is rolling in, and we'll see temperatures climb toward 0°C with sunny skies. The warming trend continues through the week, with highs potentially hitting 7°C by Thursday. Translation: Saturday is perfect for tubing or staying cozy indoors, and Sunday is made for a long walk along the Bow River pathway. Layer up and enjoy the best of both worlds.

PETS: Time to meet some new friends. Bellini the dog, Binx the cat, and Honey the guinea pig.
