Clocks stay. Ghosts walk. Cooley goes Joe Rogan. 🎃

Halloween Saturday is a sunny 8°, ZooBOO and a free family fest are on, and Joe Rogan is talking about Devin Cooley.

Good morning, Calgary! Halloween weekend is here, and the forecast is on our side. Thursday is cold with a few morning flurries, then the sun takes over and Saturday hits 8° for trick-or-treaters.

Also this weekend: no fall back. Alberta is staying on Alberta Time for good, so Sunday's clocks stay put. Plus a free ghost tour at Calgary's oldest cemetery, a 77-year-old steam engine looking brand new, a Ramsay house priced like a condo, and Joe Rogan talking about our goalie.

Grab your costume and let's get into it.

🪦 City Spotlight: Union Cemetery and Reader Rock Garden

Spooky season pick: Calgary's own Victorian garden of history. Union Cemetery was established in 1890. Today it covers 19.1 hectares, holds about 21,200 burials, and is the resting place of city builders like A.E. Cross, William Roper Hull and the Lougheed family. It also has some of the best skyline views in town.

It's FREE and the grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset. This Saturday, Oct 31, the City's volunteer guides lead a light-hearted, all-ages Union Cemetery Ghost Tour from 2 to 3:30 PM, starting at the Galloway House (Erlton St and 32 Ave SW). It's free and registration is recommended.

Pro tip: wander next door to Reader Rock Garden, a National Historic Site built by Parks Superintendent William Reader from 1913 to 1942, right beside the cemetery.

⏰ No Fall Back This Sunday

Enjoy the extra daylight in the evening, because it's here to stay. Alberta has adopted permanent Alberta Time (what we used to call Mountain Daylight Time), so when Nov 1 arrives, clocks will NOT go back an hour. Alberta Time is UTC-6, year-round, and the Province says it will gather feedback after the first full year. Most phones, computers and cars should update on their own, but some older devices may not. If anything shows the wrong time on Sunday, install the latest updates, make sure automatic time zone is on, and set it manually if you have to. Your microwave and that stubborn oven clock? Leave them alone this year.

🚂 Heritage Park’s “King of the Rockies” Is Back

Next time you drive down 14 Street SW, look left. Heritage Park unveiled its newly restored Selkirk No. 5931 steam locomotive on Tuesday, and it now gleams at the park entrance. Built in Montreal in 1949 to haul freight through the Rockies between Calgary and Revelstoke, it's one of only two Selkirks left of the 36 ever built, and it spent 20+ years at Mewata Park before moving to Heritage Park in 1981. The job was supposed to take three weeks, but after crews stripped at least five layers of paint and found holes rusted through up top, it took two and a half months. Much of the funding came from donors, including a former CP rail traffic controller who emailed the park "begging and pleading" to save it (Calgary Herald). "It looks pretty good for a 77-year-old," said interim CEO Brian Lanier.

🎃 Halloween Lands on a Sunny Saturday

It's a weekend Halloween, and the forecast is a gift: sunny and 8° on Saturday. Start early at the Calgary Zoo's ZooBOO on Oct 31 and Nov 1, where little ones trick-or-treat at kid-friendly treat stations, add to a monster mural and visit the animals in costume, all included with day admission. Or head to The Confluence for Frights & Delights: Friday from 4 to 10 PM is the 18+ Boos & Brews night market, and Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM is the all-ages Frightful Family Fest with a passport challenge (bingo earns a bag of candy), crafts, games and free museum admission. Entry is FREE, and costumes are encouraged. Sunset is around 6:11 PM, so trick-or-treaters get a mild evening for the neighbourhood rounds.
