🐾 Zoo’s “Baby Boom” Kicks Off Summer at the Calgary Zoo

The Calgary Zoo has officially entered “baby season.” Locals are invited to meet some adorable new residents! Just in the past few weeks, the zoo has welcomed a stunning lineup of new arrivals, including:

  • A critically endangered black‑and‑white ruffed lemur pup

  • A vulnerable Humboldt penguin chick

  • North American river otter pups

  • Wood bison calves

  • A spur‑winged lapwing trio

  • Plus, a near‑threatened southern bald ibis chick, with more on the way!

That’s not all! The zoo’s expectant Malayan tapir, Sempurna, is set to give birth later this summer, marking a key milestone in endangered species conservation through the Species Survival Plan. These new bundles of fluff (and feathers!) offer a perfect, family‑friendly outing… especially for folks looking to soak up summer sunshine, support local conservation, and share some smiles.

🍴 Feature Restaurant: Calcutta Cricket Club

Tucked along 17th Ave in Calgary’s Beltline, Calcutta Cricket Club brings the bold, colourful flavours of Bengal to life with a playful, modern twist. From the moment you step in, it’s clear this isn’t your typical Indian restaurant. The menu is packed with inventive small plates and mains like keema chops, chili chicken, and paneer topped with honey and nuts—perfect for sharing with a few friends over laughter and cocktails. The kati rolls, a house specialty, have earned cult status on Reddit, and the “Taste of Calcutta” tasting menu is a full-on feast praised by locals and food critics alike.

Beyond the food, the bar program is just as exciting. Guests sip on mango-chili “Crushable Gin & Tonics,” local craft beers, and creamy chai or lassi while soaking in the restaurant’s quirky, vintage social club vibe. Whether you're on a date night, gathering with a group, or showing visitors a fresh take on Indian cuisine, Calcutta Cricket Club delivers a dining experience that’s equal parts delicious and memorable.

Reservations are a smart move (especially on weekends), and the lush back patio is a fan favourite when the weather’s nice. If you can, mix and match a few small plates, grab a signature cocktail, and let the Calcutta vibes carry you through the evening.

🏞️ DAY TRIP IDEA

Waterton Lakes National Park

🚗 Day-Trip Idea: Waterton Lakes National Park

Just under three hours from Calgary, Waterton Lakes National Park offers a breathtaking escape into the heart of the Rockies—ideal for a refreshing day-long adventure in mid‑June. Nestled where the prairie meets towering peaks, Waterton dazzles with crystal-clear glacial lakes, dramatic mountain vistas, and lush pine forests.

Start your day with an easy hike up Bear’s Hump for panoramic views over Waterton townsite and the shimmering lakes below, followed by a stroll along the lakeshore or a peaceful paddle on Upper Waterton. Immerse yourself in the park’s unique ecosystem and keep an eye out for local wildlife. If time allows—and you’ve pre-booked—the famed Crypt Lake hike is a spectacular option, though it typically requires a shuttle boat.

No visit is complete without stopping by the iconic Prince of Wales Hotel, perched on the ridge with one of the most photographed views in Canada. Grab a coffee or lunch on the outdoor terrace and breathe in the fresh mountain air. For a taste of local culture, pop into the charming Waterton townsite, home to cozy cafés, ice cream parlours, and artisan shops.

  • Distance: ~270 km round-trip, about 2½–3 hours each way

  • Timing Tip: Leave early to enjoy Bear’s Hump hike before midday crowds and top it off with lunch by the lake

  • Access Note: Waterton is open and largely snow-free at lower elevations in June, though higher routes may still have snow.

An ideal blend of easy access, mountain splendor, and tranquil lakeside charm. Waterton makes for a rejuvenating summer day trip that feels worlds away, yet brings you comfortably home in time for dinner.
